Hello, everybody!
Valeu, Gi! ;)
"As many brazilians I am from a low wherewithal family. Despite all the adversities, my parents have been putting a lot of effort to ensure that I would have a good education and I have always corresponded on the best way. As a result, at 14 I was approved in one of the most disputed public high school in Rio de Janeiro. At that school I enjoyed talking with my teachers and along the conversations and classes I discovered that science excites me. Wishing to follow higher education, I won a scholarship for preparing to the National Exam of Secondary School and I passed to UFRJ, one of the best Brazilians Universities.
My interest on chemical engineering appeared when I realised that I wanted to ally my enthusiasm for science and my creativity with technical knowledge in order to develop technologies that will benefit my country. At the end of first semester I was selected on a process and I have got a scholarship called Young Talents For Science, which allowed me to attend on two research labs during one year. In my first project, I made a data collection about the freshman profile of last three semesters; at the end, the results were formally presented to avaliators by me. The second one, and more interesting, was about phase equilibria on pre-salt layer. For the first time I had the opportunity to make some practical observations related to thermodynamics.
During university I have made two short courses: cosmetics, to improve my understanding on chemicals in different kinds of hair and skin, and another of career and coaching for chemical engineer, aiming to discover what Brazilian labor market wants of us.
Recently, on my fourth semester, I saw that biochemical engineering is what I want to work with. This subject was given by an amazing professional, so my interest on biochemistry grew, making me to survey more of it in articles and after the quest I was sure about my career. To confirm my choice, I decided to stay for a month voluntarily in a laboratory and I could learn techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis. In that lab I followed a research about caterpillar's digestive enzymes of biotechnological interest and among my duties were collecting eggs, cleaning and feeding the insectary. This passage also provided me a critical eye.
In my free time I like watching movies, series and reading fiction books, because it activates my imagination and gives me inspiration to write stories. I have never abandoned my projects, despite my bipolar disorder and anxiety attacks, because I have in my mind the importance of what I have been doing and the satisfaction of achievement makes me go ahead. Thus, Science Without Borders program will be the highlight of my life. I hope to have different experiences with it and learn to look at the world from another perspective, thinking out of the box.
Having the opportunity to study in the UK, one of the places in the world with the best educational system, you would gain a dedicated person who seeks better opportunities in life going after what wants. And then, I will get the chance to grow personally and professionally, acquiring knowledge to contribute with my nation."
